GREENFIELD — Officials with the Greenfield Police Officers, GPD, say they have arrested a 21 year old Greenfield man on preliminary Arson charges following a domestic issue earlier this week.

Seth Schmidt, officials say allegedly started a fire inside his apartment. Officers with the GPD were dispatched to assist the Greenfield Fire Territory, GFT, on a reported structure fire Tuesday morning, July 11 to 2130 Crossing Lane in the Greenfield Crossing apartment complex where they found an active fire inside an apartment.

Police say firefighters were quickly able to put it out with fire extinguishers and that the fire was contained to just the one apartment.

Once the fire was extinguished, GPD detectives and GFT Fire Marshal Steve Kropacek began to investigate the cause and origin of the fire. Information gathered from participants and witnesses indicates that a domestic disturbance had occurred immediately prior to the fire.

Evidence located at the scene resulted in Schmidt being arrested. Schmidt is currently in the Hancock County Jail awaiting an initial appearance in court.

Formal charges are being considered by the Hancock County Prosecutors Office and will be filed once the review of the case is complete.

Official charges had not been filed by press time Thursday.
