MVHS names new band director
FORTVILLE – Mt. Vernon High School has hired Dr. Kathryn Spangler as director of bands. She comes to Mt. Vernon most recently from her role as associate director of bands and director of athletic bands at Indiana State University. She has 25 years of experience leading music departments in K-12 public schools and higher education, having also spent three years at Triton Central High School, leading the marching band to three state finals. She also led their indoor percussion group to achieve top placements for three years with an additional state championship in 2017.
Spangler has a bachelor of arts music degree from Butler University; a masters of music performance and music education degree from Butler University; and a doctor of arts in music education and educational psychology from Ball State University.
Education foundation golf fundraiser coming up
KNIGHTSTOWN – The Eastern Hancock Education Foundation will have a golf fundraiser from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 6.

Universities name local honor students
HANCOCK COUNTY – Several students with Hancock County ties were named to dean’s lists at universities.
DePauw University in Greencastle announced a spring dean’s list for those achieving a grade point average of at least 3.5, including Tessa Freeman of Greenfield; Seth Gillen, Greenfield; David Guhl, McCordsville; Elizabeth Harris, New Palestine; Hannah Hughes, New Palestine; Lilly Jennings, McCordsville; Emma Mann, New Palestine; Kendall Mann, New Palestine; Katherine McKinley, New Palestine; Haley Riley, McCordsville; Kelly Seifert, McCordsville; Katherine Steele, Greenfield; and Morgan Tharp, McCordsville.
Haley Hogue of Greenfield was named to the president’s list of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. The list recognizes students in the top 3 percent of undergraduates for academic excellence.
Wabash College in Crawfordsville named five local students to the dean’s list for achieving a 3.5 grade point average in the spring semester: Nicholas Bastian of New Palestine; Evan Dickey, Fortville; Nathan Ellenberger, New Palestine; Jordan Reel, Greenfield; and Jax Wilson, Greenfield.
The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Al named Connor Grim of Fortville to the dean’s list for achieving at least a 3.5 grade point average. Lucy Collins and Andrea Hayes of McCordsville were named to the president’s list for achieving a 4.0 GPA.
Manchester University in North Manchester named Keryna Barrett of Greenfield and Madison Stamm of Fortville to the dean’s list for achieving at least a 3.5 GPA.
EHHS reunion coming up
CHARLOTTESVLLE – The Eastern Hancock High School Class of 1970 is having a 50-plus reunion this fall.

Local students graduate from Cedarville
GREENFIELD – Two students from Hancock County recently graduated from Cedarville University.
Sarah Hannay of McCordsville and Hope Kiner of New Palestine achieved undergraduate degrees from the Cedarville, Ohio-based Baptist institution this spring.
