GREENFIELD, IN
Robert Harold Smoot, 97, Greenfield, passed away Thursday, June 15, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Bob was born on March 12, 1926, in Indianapolis, to James W. and Lillian (Schafhauser) Smoot. Bob participated in marching band and numerous sports, including track, while attending and graduating from Ben Davis High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business from Butler University. He married his love Nancy Taylor on August 6, 1949. Bob served in the United States Army during World War II.
Bob was a tremendously loving husband, father, brother, and friend to all who knew him and will be sadly missed. Bob always made it a point to put his family and grandchildren at the top of his daily list. Equally important was the need to remain patriotic. Bob played softball and bowled well into his 80s and perked up whenever he heard music. He loved his vegetable gardens. He could often be seen and heard rooting on any sporting event and any team, especially Butler sports and that of the Indianapolis Colts, but with heavier cheer for his children and grandchildren when they participated in sporting events. In the neighborhood, Bob was referred to as “Neighborhood Watch.” Bob worked in sales for Farrell-Argast Electrical for well over 50 years before retiring. Bob loved his faith and church while attending Greenfield Christian Church for over 48 years. He served as an elder for many years. He was also a member of the Northeastern Exchange Club, the VFW, and the American Legion.
Bob is survived by his loving children: Mark (Jerri) Smoot, Bill (Bev) Smoot, Duane (Cheryl) Smoot, Beth (Joe) Turpin, and Jim (Denise) Smoot; son-in-law, Dave Young; 17 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; the love of his life, Nancy Smoot, of 70+ years; daughter, Lila Young; grandsons, Nick and Andrew; and siblings: Raymond, James, Harry, John, Norma, and Kathleen.
