Mt. Vernon’s girls track and field team placed second and had two champions at Tuesday’s Pendleton Heights Girls Track and Field Sectional.

The top three finishers in each event advance to next week’s regional competition.

Mt. Vernon’s Riley Nielsen won the pole vault by clearing 11-feet, 6-inches. The 3,200-meter relay team of Hannah Hauser, Tenley Benz, Emma Gale and Emma Gasiorek won in 10:01.05.

The Marauders added runner-up finishes from Hauser (1600), the 400 relay (Mya Eppert, Ani’ya Williams, Molly Worth, Nielsen), and in the 1600 relay (Worth, Hauser, Marissa Miner, Gasiorek).

Lawrence North won with 165.5 points. Mt. Vernon scored 121. Eastern Hancock was sixth with 37.

The Royals got advancements from Ellie Meyer, who was second in the high jump (5-feet, 1-inch) and Sydney Springman, who was third in the 100 hurdles (16.92).

Other third-place finishers for Mt. Vernon included, Eppert (100, 12.98 seconds), Gale (3200, 12:07.59), and Chloe Wingham (high jump, 4-11).

Baseball

Marauders clinch outright HHC crown

With a 13-1 victory in game 1 of its two-game Hoosier Heritage Conference series with Yorktown, Mt. Vernon’s baseball team clinched the outright conference title, at Yorktown, Tuesday.

The Marauders (19-5, 13-0) are the first HHC team to win three straight outright league titles.

Mt. Vernon scored in each of the five innings played, including a five-run second and four-run third.

Yorktown dropped to 17-6 overall and 10-3 in conference play.

The teams meet again today at Mt. Vernon in the final conference contest for both teams.

Dragons win league contest

New Palestine’s baseball team improved to 18-7 overall and 9-4 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference with an 11-0 victory at New Castle Tuesday.

Blaine Nunnally threw a six-inning, three-hitter. He struck out nine.

Nunnally and Brayden Marrow each drove in three runs.

The Dragons and Trojans meet in New Palestine today.

G-C loses pitcher’s duel

Greenfield-Central’s Connor Sims struck out 10 and surrendered six hits but the Cougars could not push across runs in a 2-0 loss at Shelbyville Tuesday.

Grant Shepherd, A.J Oden and Brodie Mayberry had hits for G-C.

The teams meet again today in Greenfield.

Greenfield-Central is 12-9-2 and 7-6 in the HHC.

Softball

Marauders down Cougars

Shelby Rakosky, Drew Fithian and Graci Hines all hit home runs and Easton Wampler blasted two to give Mt. Vernon a 10-4 softball victory over Hancock County and Hoosier Heritage Conference rival Greenfield-Central Tuesday, in Fortville.

Wampler had a sixth-inning grand slam.

Mt. Vernon improved to 13-9 overall and finish 3-4 in the HHC.

Greenfield-Central dropped to 17-8 and 3-4 in conference play.

Kristen Wineinger had a home run and three RBIs for the Cougars.

Royals remain unbeaten

With an 8-0 victory over visiting Wes-Del on Tuesday, Eastern Hancock’s softball team improved to 19-6 overall and 7-0 in the Mid-Eastern Conference.

Madison Stephens threw a one-hitter and struck out 12.

Sammie Bolding and Grace Stapleton had home runs. Stapleton had two RBIs. Six different players drove in runs.

Girls tennis

Royals win MEC

Halted by rain on Saturday, Eastern Hancock’s girls tennis team completed the Mid-Eastern Conference tournament Monday and finished in first place.

The Royals had three champions and all-conference team members. They included No. 2 singles player Sophie Hardin, No. 3 singles player Tori Parker and the No. 2 doubles team of Pheebie Nelson and Sarah Clark.
