Eastern Hancock junior Sydney Springman won both the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles races and Sydney Hayes won the discus at Friday’s Mid-Eastern Conference Track and Field Championships hosted by Monroe Central High School in Parker City.
Springman finished first in the 100 with a time of 16.64 seconds. She won the 300 in 57.71 seconds.
On her last attempt, Hayes threw the discus 105-feet, 11-inches to win by nearly four feet. She was second going into her final attempt with a best throw of 99-feet, 5-inches.
Ellie Meyer was runner-up in the high jump.
As a team, the girls finished third with 72 points. Wapahani won with 131, edging Daleville with 126.
For the boys, Preston Markley was runner-up in both the 1,600-meter run (4:35.52) and 3,200-meter run (10:29.52). Logan Hoskins was second in the shot put with a distance of 44-feet, 8-inches.
Team-wise, Eastern Hancock’s boys finished third with 100 points. Wapahani won with 149. Monroe Central scored 120.
Softball
Royals win invite opener
Eastern Hancock (16-4) opened play in the Franklin County Softball Invitational with an 18-0 victory over Franklin County (14-11) Friday.
The Royals jumped out with eight first-inning runs. They added one in the second, five in the third and four in the fourth inning. The game was called after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Eastern Hancock had four home runs. Emma Bolding hit two. Grace Stapleton and Kaylee Kline also had round-trippers.
Bolding went 3-for-3 with five RBIs. Lilli Ringer hit two doubles and had three hits.
Kline, Stapleton, Ringer, Sammie Bolding and Emily Hodges had two RBIs each.
Madison Stephens threw a one-hitter and struck out six.
Eastern Hancock plays Salem at 2 p.m. today at Franklin County.
Girls tennis
New Pal wins HHC match
New Palestine improved to 14-7 on the season and finished Hoosier Heritage Conference play with a 5-2 mark after a 5-0 victory at Pendleton Heights Friday.
Olivia Hasenkamp won her No. 1 singles match 6-0, 6-0. Kaitlyn Mitchell, at No. 2, won 6-0, 6-1. No. 3 Courtney Johnson won 6-0, 6-3.
In doubles action, the No. 1 group of Bethany Blachly and Jo Harvey won 6-2, 6-4. The No. 2 team of Maddy Potter and Emily Appleby won 6-0, 6-0.
