HANCOCK COUNTY – Election Day is here. Voting hours are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 2. There are several vote centers located throughout the county; a voter can head to any site regardless of their address. In addition to the Buck Creek Township Fire Department, 5809 W. Airport Blvd., Greenfield; and the main branch of the Hancock County Public Library, 900 W. McKenzie Road, Greenfield; vote centers are at the Hancock County Courthouse Annex, 111 American Legion Place, Greenfield; Cumberland Town Hall, 11501 E. Washington St., Cumberland; Fortville Community Center, 400 W. Church St., Fortville; and McCordsville Town Hall, 6280 W. 800 N., McCordsville.

Of the 33 candidates who have filed in the 2023 municipal election in Hancock County, 18 are in contested races.

All are Republicans. The offices they seek include mayor and four of the seven city council seats for Greenfield, the county seat. In Cumberland, whose east side is rapidly growing, a newcomer challenges an incumbent for a district that includes part of Hancock County. A race is also underway for a town council seat in Fortville, where multiple commercial and residential developments have landed over the past several years. Two council contests are in McCordsville, which is in the beginnings of an ambitious town center development.

The contenders come into the election with different views on the futures of their respective communities — futures voters can help shape by educating themselves ahead of making decisions at the polls.
