HANCOCK COUNTY — It was all just another task in the line of duty for Hancock County Sheriff’s deputies Josh Cochard and Scott Chapman. Still, they both went above and beyond during their patrol shifts this past weekend, helping a woman in distress. The two deputies put forth a positive act of kindness when they helped a woman in need, including buying her groceries and delivering them to her campground site.
Officials from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department said Deputy Cochard and Deputy Chapman both responded to the scene of a female driving an electric scooter in the roadway, rolling down the Fortville Pike on Saturday. The deputies thought the situation seemed a little too dangerous for her to continue on traveling on such a busy road and told her so.
The female was new to the Hancock County area and a resident of a local campground, officials with the HCSD posted on their social media site.
“She had no vehicle transportation and was on the scooter traveling to Kroger for groceries when she was stopped,” officials said in the post.
Since the deputies noted there was no safe route to make the nearly 5-mile trip to the grocery store as well as the return ride with the food, coupled with the fact the deputies did not feel comfortable letting her continue, the law enforcement officers stepped up and took on the task themselves.
Despite her confidence she could make the trip, Deputy Cochard went to the store, picked up her groceries and delivered them to the woman’s camp site after Deputy Chapman paid for the food.
“Deputy Cochard provided the female with transportation resources in the county for future grocery trips,” Capt. Robert Harris, public information officer for the HCSD told the Daily Reporter. “Deputy Scott Chapman actually purchased the groceries.”
The social media post about the act of kindness from the deputies received hundreds of reactions and dozens of positive comments thanking the deputies for going “above and beyond.”
