HANCOCK COUNTY — A man already serving a lengthy sentence at the Miami Correctional Facility in Bunker Hill for felony drug crimes had his local drug case settled in Hancock County Circuit Court late last week.
Mathew Poland, 37, was facing a Level 3 felony count of dealing methamphetamine from an incident in September of 2018 in Hancock County. However, that charge was dismissed along with a Level 6 felony count of maintaining a common nuisance as part of a plea agreement. Poland admitted guilt to a Level 5 felony count of possession of methamphetamine as part of the deal.
Poland was officially sentenced Thursday, March 2 by Judge Scott Sirk to a four-year term for the Level 5 felony charge. The sentence is to run consecutive with a Level 2 felony charge of dealing methamphetamine in Madison County from April of 2019 which called for a 20-year term with 10 years suspended. The local charge will however run concurrent with a different Level 2 felony count of dealing methamphetamine in Madison County, which is also a 20-year term with 10 years suspended, court records state. Poland was sentenced for that crime in April of 2019, court records show.
Locally, Poland was given jail credit for 211 days served.
