Cougars extend winning streak to 16

Greenfield-Central outscored Avon 16-6 in the second quarter on its way to a 49-43 victory over the visiting Orioles Saturday.

The Cougars have won 16 straight games and are 19-1 on the season. They moved up to No. 12 in the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association poll.

The teams were tied 10-10 at the end of the first quarter.

Greenfield-Central had three double-figure scorers led by Dylan Moles with 16 points. Tyler Kerkhof and Braylon Mullins had 12 points each. Mullins added a team-high five rebounds.

The Cougars hit 10 3-pointers.

Greenfield-Central is back in action Saturday with its final home game against Martinsville. The Cougars will honor their six seniors, Moles, Kerkhof, Owen Anderson, Will DeJarnett, Ian Jack and Nathan Gasparrini.

Marauders beat Pike

Mt. Vernon improved to 13-7 on the season with a 72-64 win over Pike Saturday afternoon.

The Marauders shot 52.1 percent (25 of 48) from the field and had four players scored in double figures.

Freshman Luke Ertel led the way with 17 points. Senior Eli Bridenthal scored 16 and frosh Julien Smith had 15. Sophomore Tanner Teschendorf was close behind with 14 points.

Mt. Vernon hit 11 of 23 (47.8 percent) 3-point attempts and had 3s from six different players.

Bridenthal had eight rebounds. Ertel had six assists.

Pike is also 13-7 on the season.

Dragons lose at Connersville

Outscored 34-25 in the second half, New Palestine lost 58-52 at Connersville Saturday.

The Dragons fell to 18-2 overall and dropped to a tie at No. 13 in the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association poll.

Blaine Nunnally led the Dragons with 21 points. Ben Slagley added 14 and Ian Stephens scored 12. Connersville improved to 15-4.

New Palestine is back in action Friday, hosting Mt. Vernon.

Gymnastics

Dragons are runners-up in Bloomington

New Palestine’s gymnastics team finished in second place at Saturday’s Bloomington North Invitational.

The host school won the event with 106.35 points. New Palestine scored 99.45.

Top placers included second-place finishes from J.J. Fee on the floor exercise and Addy Kendall on uneven bars. Fee scored a 9.25. Kendall had an 8.55.

Lynzie Stiller was third in the all-around with a total of 33.875.

New Palestine is host to Morristown and Scecina at The Gymnastics Company on Wednesday.
