Big first quarter paves way to Royals win

Eastern Hancock’s boys basketball team scored 26 first-quarter points and went on to defeat Northeastern 55-45 in Fountain City Friday.

Jacob Spaulding had all of his team-high 16 points in the first half. Grant Gray followed with 10 points.

The Royals led 40-27 at the half and 49-31 heading into the final period.

Luke Morris finished with nine points. Silas Spaulding added eight.

The Royals improved to 3-1 on the season. Northeastern drops to 3-2.

Eastern Hancock (3-1, 1-0) is back in action tonight in a Mid-Eastern Conference battle at Daleville (2-2, 1-1). Northeastern travels to Shenandoah (1-2) next Friday.

Marauders stave off Arabians rally

Mt. Vernon took a 16-point lead into the fourth quarter, but had to fight off a Pendleton Heights comeback in a 53-50 boys basketball victory at Mt. Vernon High School Friday.

Pendleton Heights scored 26 of its 50 points in the final period.

The Marauders led 40-24 heading into the final eight minutes.

Freshman Julien Smith led Mt. Vernon with 15 points. Eli Bridenthal chipped in eight and Brady Fitzgerald scored seven.

Pendleton Heights was led by Evan Mozingo with 20 points.

It was the Hoosier Heritage Conference opener for both teams.

Mt. Vernon (3-2, 1-0) travels to Shelbyville (2-1, 0-0) next Friday for another HHC matchup. Pendleton Heights (1-4, 0-1) travels to Connersville (2-2) today.

Boys swimming

Cougars defeat Arabians

Greenfield-Central boys swimming and diving team edged Pendleton Heights 97-89 at the G-C pool Thursday.

The Cougars won six individual races and one relay. Colten Mayberry won the 100-yard freestyle and 100 breaststroke. Jaeden Peters took top honors in the 500 freestyle. Aiden Michael won the 200 IM. Tyler Swango touched first in the 200 freestyle. Alex Jahrsdoerfer won the 1-meter diving competition.

Jahrsdoerfer, Jonathan Grimes, Evan Teskey and Peters won the 200 freestyle relay.

The Cougars are back in action Monday at Mt. Vernon.

Dragons sweep at home

New Palestine’s boys swimming and diving team picked up a pair of victories Thursday at the New Palestine Natatorium.

The Dragons improved to 4-1 in dual meets with wins over New Castle and Eastern Hancock.

New Palestine defeated the Royals 168-27 and New Castle 154-110. Eastern Hancock lost to New Castle 144-34. The Royals are 1-9 in duals.

Winners from New Palestine included, Dawson Lynch (200-yard freestyle, 2:03.23; 100 backstroke, 1:01.24), Chase Martin (50 freestyle, 24.55 seconds), Aidan Stephens (1-meter diving, 165.05 points), Ian Erwin (100 freestyle, 55.09 seconds) and Dontae Thompson (100 breaststroke, 1:11.50).

The Dragons won all three relays. Jake Myers, Aidan Kingery, Reese Cox, and James Watson won the 200 medley relay (1:54.91). Erwin, Martin, Thompson and Liam Fuller won the 200 freestyle relay (1:38.56). Lynch, Ashton Turner, Watson and Thompson won the 400 freestyle relay (3:45.13).

New Palestine competes today at the East Central Relays. The Royals are hosting the Eastern Hancock Invitational.

EH downed by Guerin, N. Central

Eastern Hancock’s boys swimming and diving team was defeated by North Central and Guerin Catholic at North Central Tuesday.

Scores for the meet were not available at press time.

The Royals host the Eastern Hancock Invitational today.

Girls swimming

Cougars win 10 of 12 events, defeat Arabians

Greenfield-Central’s girls swimming and diving team took the top spot on podium in 10 of 12 events and downed Pendleton Heights 109-77 at the G-C pool Thursday.

Cece Duffy-Johnson won the 200-yard freestyle and 500 freestyle. Rachel Stutz was victorious in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Norah Johnson was first in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. Taylor Parsons touched first in the 200 IM and Mary Ellen Stratman won the 100 butterfly.

The Cougars also won a pair of relays. Stutz, Johnson, Stratman and Duffy-Johnson were first in the 200 medley relay. Duffy-Johnson, Stratman, Stutz and Johnson won the 400 freestyle relay.

The Cougars are back in action Monday at Mt. Vernon.

NP girls split with EH, NC

New Palestine’s girls swimming and diving team split a triangular meet Thursday against Eastern Hancock and New Castle at the New Palestine Natatorium.

New Pal defeated Eastern Hancock 161-87 and lost to New Castle 156-123. Against New Castle, Eastern Hancock lost 167-79.

First place finishers for the Dragons included, Adrianna Huston (50-yard freestyle, 27.03 seconds), Chloe Siler (100 butterfly, 1:10:37) and the 400 freestyle relay team of Sullie Leavell, Siler, Katelyn Trimpe and Huston (4:04.80).

New Palestine is 4-5 in duals. Eastern Hancock is 5-7.

New Palestine competes today at the East Central Relays. The Royals are hosting the Eastern Hancock Invitational.

EH defeated at North Central

Eastern Hancock’s girls swimming and diving team was defeated by North Central and Guerin Catholic at North Central Tuesday.
