GREENFIELD – Crunching numbers and reviewing test results are all part of the process in this year’s review of the Greenfield-Central mathematics curriculum.

G-C teachers review a subject just about every year for possible changes and improvements in teaching tools, said Dr. Lori Katz, director of teaching and learning for the school corporation.

While in recent years the focus has included science, social studies and English, this year mathematics is the priority.

“We know the greatest impact on the student is the teacher in the classroom, but it’s my primary job to make sure we put the best tools in front of the teacher so that teacher can excel at what they do,” Katz said.

Teams of two dozen or so teachers, instructional coaches and parents met last week to review the current curriculum. Katz said they look at recommendations from national educational leaders, cross-reference with state standards and delve into data on how each G-C school building is doing through standardized test scores, from grades kindergarten to 12.

Katz said they determine where students are excelling, what areas need improvement, and then cross-reference those ideas and concerns with mathematics textbooks and programs from various publishers.

It’s important to get many people involved, Katz added, from general education teachers, to teachers who work with special education students, to those that teach high-ability students.

Ultimately committees will come to recommendations on curriculum to use in the 2023-24 school year and beyond; the recommendation will go to the school board for final approval in March.
