Cougars pick up first win of season

Greenfield-Central’s girls basketball team survived a fourth-quarter barrage of Whiteland 3-pointers to pick up a 53-45 victory Saturday at Greenfield-Central High School.

Whiteland hit six fourth-quarter treys and outscored the Cougars 22-12 in the final period, but the hosts had built up a large cushion during the first three periods.

G-C sophomore Chaney Brown led all scorers with 22 points, including 13 in the first half.

Sophomore Brooklyn McConnell had 13 points, including three 3-pointers. Seniors Aryanna Hibbard and Taylor Smith scored 11 and seven points, respectively.

Up by three at the end of the first quarter, Greenfield-Central began pulling away in the middle periods, outscoring the Warriors 31-16.

Greenfield-Central plays host to Tri on Thursday.

Dragons win home opener

Senior guard Isabella Gizzi scored 26 of the team’s 45 points to lead New Palestine to a 45-30 victory over Batesville in the girls basketball team’s home opener Saturday.

With the victory, the Dragons improved to 2-0 on the season.

Up by six at halftime, 21-15, Gizzi helped New Palestine pull away in the second half. She had 15 points in the final two periods, including nine in the fourth quarter. She hit 6 of 8 free throws in the final stanza and was 8 of 11 for the game.

Vivian Miller added seven points. Frosh Sadey Hughbanks scored six.

The Dragons welcome Greenwood Wednesday.

Eastern suffers first loss

Eastern Hancock led at the end of each of the first three quarters, but host Rushville was able to claim the victory, 49-44, Saturday.

It was the girls basketball team’s first loss of the season. Eastern led 15-10 after the first period and by four, 23-19, at halftime. The lead was just one point, 31-30, heading into the final quarter.

Grace Stapleton and Makenzie O’Neal led Eastern Hancock in scoring with 12 points each. Sydney Springman and Ruby White scored five points apiece.

Eastern Hancock (2-1) hosts Triton Central Saturday.

Marauders lose to Warren Central

Mt. Vernon dropped to 1-2 on the season with a 67-45 loss at home to Warren Central Saturday.

The Marauders were outscored 31-13 in the second half.

Mt. Vernon will play host to Bishop Chatard Thursday.

Girls wrestling

Cougars 8th, Dragons 18th at NP Invitational

Both New Palestine and Greenfield-Central opened the 2022-23 girls wrestling season at the New Palestine Invitational Saturday.

The Cougars placed eighth (85 points), while the Dragons placed 18th (39) out of 45 teams. Lake Central and Franklin Central tied for first with 127 points.

Greenfield-Central was represented by seven wrestlers, while New Palestine had three girls compete.

Leading the way for the Cougars was Kylie Smith-Foster (113 pounds), who went 3-0 to win her weight class.

Following Smith-Foster were three separate fifth-place finishes. Ella Harpold (170) went 4-1, Abi Elliott (132 B) 2-1, and Chloe Rafalco (145) 2-1.

New Palestine also had competitors at 170 and 145. Julia Champ (170) and Madisyn Covington (145) both went 2-1. Champ placed second and Covington was third.

Rounding out the competitors for the Cougars were Lilly Shannon, Maddy Reed, and Molly Hutchinson.

Shannon (120) went 3-2 before an injury forced her out of the fifth place match. Reed ended 2-3 and was eighth in the 170-pound division. Hutchinson (138) finished 0-2 in her first career matches.

New Palestine’s Jillian Champ went 0-2 in the 138-pound division.

Greenfield-Central wrestles a dual meet at Perry Meridian Wednesday. The Dragons are back in action Saturday at the Purdue Poly Invitational.
