HANCOCK COUNTY – A Knightstown man died when his car crashed and caught fire early Saturday morning in Hancock County. Officials with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department said a single-vehicle crash occurred on U.S. 40 just east of Greenfield at 2 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 29 in the area of County Road 400E and U.S. 40, just east of Greenfield.
Officers from the Sheriff’s Department and the Greenfield Police Department arrived on the scene and found a single-car crash with the vehicle on fire, Capt. Robert Harris said in a press release. Officers immediately called for the Hancock County Fatal Accident Crash Team (F.A.C.Team) to respond.
The crash involved a 2017 Ford Fusion with only one occupant. The driver was identified as Adam D. Bundy, 24, Knightstown. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Upon arrival, the first responding officers attempted to enter the vehicle to remove Bundy, but the flames were too hot, Harris said. Bundy was only removed and identified after the fire department was able to extinguish the fire.
Before the crash, officials noted, the vehicle was traveling eastbound on U.S. 40 toward Knightstown. For some reason, the vehicle left the roadway, crashed through residential fencing, and struck a large tree. This caused the car to catch fire at approximately 4100 East U.S. 40.
Officials say it is not known why the vehicle left the roadway. It is also not known if drugs or alcohol were a factor, or if a seat belt was used, Harris said.
An autopsy will be performed, and the investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the crash and how Bundy died. A portion of U.S. 40 was closed for approximately three hours while officers investigated and cleared the scene.
