Big second half keys Marauder win

YORKTOWN — Down 35-29 at halftime, Mt. Vernon outscored Yorktown 34-10 in the final two quarters to defeat the Tigers 63-45 in the regular season and Hoosier Heritage Conference finale Friday.

Mt. Vernon won its fifth straight game and secured second place in the HHC. The Marauders are 6-3 overall and 6-1 in the conference. Yorktown dropped its second straight. The Tigers are also 6-3, but lost their final two league matchups to fall to third place at 5-2.

Luke Ertel threw five touchdown passes and Drew Martin rushed for three scores.

Ertel threw three touchdown passes to Purdue-bound receiver George Burhenn, including a third-quarter score to give the Marauders a 42-38 lead. Another strike to Burhenn made it 49-38. Eli Bridenthal, who had an interception return for a touchdown for Mt. Vernon’s first points, caught a touchdown pass to put the Marauders up 56-38.

The Marauders begin defense of their Class 4A state title next week, opening tournament play in Sectional 22, at home, against top-ranked rival New Palestine.
