Cougars win on Senior Night

Greenfield-Central celebrated its seniors with a decisive 9-0 Hoosier Heritage Conference win over visiting New Castle on Senior Night Tuesday.

The Cougars recognized senior class team members Cora Bishop, Sarah Contreraz, Meilyn Howe, Gladys Rodriguez, Hannah Skene and Courtney Vaughn, along with senior athletic trainer Hailey Sawyer.

G-C scored eight of its nine goals in the first half.

Chaney Brown and Contreraz each had two goals. Paige McCarley, Chloe Gardner, Romie Bennett, Vaughn and Bishop also scored goals. Bishop had three assists, Kalyn Moss contributed two assists. Tessa Joyner, Contreraz, McCarley, and Skene also had assists.

McCarley’s goal was her team-best 10th of the season.

Skene and Vaughn were in goal for the shutout, the Cougars fourth in the last five games.

Greenfield-Central (6-5-1, 3-3) travels to Shelbyville (9-1, 3-1) today for its final HHC match of the season. Varsity kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Boys soccer

Mt. Vernon beats Martinsville

Mt. Vernon improved to 8-4 on the season with a 3-2 win over visiting Martinsville Tuesday.

Griffin Ruminer, Akseli Huopalahti and Brennan LaBelle scored goals for the Marauders. Zach Johnson and Ethan Tucker had assists.

Huopalahti’s goal was his team-high eighth of the season.

Goalkeeper Bryce Glazier had eight saves.

Mt. Vernon (8-4, 5-1) wraps up its Hoosier Heritage Conference play today with a home contest against Pendleton Heights (6-6, 3-1).

Boys tennis

Eastern sweeps Tri

Eastern Hancock improved to 10-1 on the season with a 5-0 victory over visiting Tri Tuesday.

With Tri only having singles players, both EH doubles teams won by forfeit.

In singles, Eastern dominated with Zeke Dixon (6-2, 6-1), Luke Fletcher (6-0, 6-0) and Luke Schilling (6-0, 6-0) all getting straight set wins.

The Royals were scheduled to play host to Anderson Wednesday. They have a match today against Knightstown, also at home.
