In his first collegiate game, Marian University freshman running back and former Mt. Vernon all-stater, Keagan LaBelle scored a touchdown in the Knights’ 86-0 victory over Madonna University.
LaBelle scored on a 48-yard run with 10:59 left in the third quarter to give Marian a 72-0 lead.
He was the team’s second leading rusher with seven carries for 80 yards.
Roland has successful debut
In a 17-14 victory over Rose-Hulman, DePauw freshman linebacker Joey Roland had five tackles, including 0.5 tackles for loss.
It was the Greenfield-Central grad’s college football debut. In addition to the tackles, Roland had two QB hurries.
Luker has strong game in Hanover opener
Former New Palestine standout Brody Luker had a team-high seven tackles, including three solos, and an interception, in the season-opening football game for Hanover College.
The Panthers lost to Centre 31-29.
Luker is a junior defensive back for HC.
Greenfield-Central’s Lance McKee had a reception for 10 yards for the Panthers.
McKee, a Wishbone quarterback for the Cougars, is a sophomore wide receiver at Hanover.
Olive puts on pressure
In the season opener for Wabash College, former New Palestine defensive lineman Will Olive had two tackles in a 52-48 win over Hampden-Sydney.
Both of Olive’s tackles were for losses, including a quarterback sack. He also had a quarterback hurry.
Slunaker rushes, throws for TD in Georgetown win
Gehrig Slunaker rushed for one touchdown and threw for another in Georgetown’s 52-7 win over Bluefield Saturday.
The freshman quarterback that helped lead Mt. Vernon to the Class 4A state title, scored on a 1-yard run early in the second quarter to give his team a 21-0 lead.
In the third quarter, he threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to JC Shegog.
Slunaker was 9 of 21 passing for 117 yards. He had six rushes for 12 yards.
Hockett, Jones contribute in another Taylor win
Former New Palestine linebackers Jacob Hockett and Aven Jones were big contributors for the second straight week for the Taylor University football team.
Each had six tackles, tied for second most on the team, in a 52-6 win over Judson.
Hockett had two tackles for loss. Jones, the Mid-States Football Association Mideast League Defensive Player of the Week last week, had 1.5 tackles for loss and a quarterback hurry.
County connections at AU
Former Eastern Hancock standout Cayden Sotelo had an interception, with a 19-yard return, and four tackles in Anderson University’s 38-0 loss at Trine University Thursday.
Two other former Eastern Hancock players accumulated stats for the Ravens, J.P. Fuchs had two receptions for 12 yards. Gabe Lawler had four rushes for eight yards.
Another former Hancock County player, New Palestine’s Caleb Byers had two receptions for nine yards.

Bulmahn has double-double
Ceci Bulmahn had a double-double in Southern Illinois University’s 3-0 victory over Nicholls Saturday.
Bulmahn, an All-American at Mt. Vernon High School, had 10 kills and 16 digs.
Hohnbaum has 11 kills
On Saturday, Meredith Hohnbaum, a freshman at University of New Hampshire, had a season-high 11 kills and just two errors on 19 swings in UNH’s 3-2 loss against Villanova.
The Mt. Vernon High School grad had a .474 attack percentage.
Women’s soccer
Swingle gets an assist
University of Cincinnati freshman Maddie Swingle had her first collegiate point, recording an assist in the Bearcats 2-0 victory over Murray State on Aug. 28.
It was the former Mt. Vernon standout’s third college game and first start. She played the entire 90 minutes on Sunday in a 2-0 loss at Pittsburgh.

Johnson gets assist in UIndy win
Brandon Johnson, a junior midfielder at University of Indianapolis, had an assist in the Greyhounds 5-0 win over Ohio Dominican on Aug. 27.
Johnson, who played at Mt. Vernon High School, is one of five Hancock County players on the UIndy roster. Greenfield-Central grad Caleb Mundell, a junior midfielder, is third on the team, after three games, in minutes played with 256.
Others on the roster include, Abe Buescher (Greenfield-Central, goalkeeper), Tylin Broaders (Mt. Vernon) and Zack Bell (Greenfield-Central, midfielder)
