GREENFIELD — The Greenfield man who barricaded himself inside a home in the 600 block of Fern Street last week and refused to come out for several hours following a domestic violence incident has officially been charged with nine different crimes.
Caleb Keith Adams, 25, Greenfield has been charged with a Level 3 felony count of criminal confinement while armed with a deadly weapon; two Level 5 felony counts of domestic battery and intimidation; three Level 6 felony counts of domestic battery, pointing a firearm at another and strangulation, as well as three Class A misdemeanor charges from an incident Monday, Aug. 22.
Adams made his initial appearance in Hancock County Circuit Court Monday, Aug. 29 where Judge Scott Sirk set a $25,000 cash bond and set a pre-trial court date for Thursday, Oct. 6.
According to a probable cause, officials from the Greenfield Police Department were called to the 600 block of Fern Street around 10 p.m. Monday Aug. 22 due to a female knocking on a house stating her boyfriend was trying to kill her. Upon arrival, officers located a female walking on Fern Street near the intersection of Collins Way. The woman told officials she was a victim of a domestic battery and her boyfriend, Adams, was trying to kill her.
The woman told officials in the report Adams had “this blank stare” at her and grabbed her by the throat before throwing her to the ground. He then climbed on top of her, strangling her until she started to lose consciousness. She stated he also attempted to break her jaw while he was on top of her, the report said.
When she regained consciousness, the woman said she went for the front door to exit the residence, but that’s when Adams grabbed a pistol and pointed it at her, the report stated. Adams told her if she left, he would kill her and “go out in a blaze of glory,” the report said. The woman told officials she waited until Adams was not pointing the gun in her direction then ran out the front door to a neighbor across the street.
Law enforcement set up a perimeter around the house then began to make phone calls to Adams on his cell phone, but the phone calls went to voicemail, the report said. The front door of the residence was still partially open to the house, so three GPD officers went up to the open door to see if we could see Adams, but police could not, the report stated.
The officers requested a call out for the Hancock County Joint Tactical Team, the report stated.
The team was on scene for approximately 6.5 hours, using chemical munitions and negotiators in attempts to get Adams to exit the residence. The team was able to take Adams into custody without further incident at approximately 6 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23.
