Has care of nursing home residents been compromised?

To the Editor:

Thank you for your articles about the lawsuit filed by the Indianapolis Star against Hancock Regional Hospital and other hospitals seeking financial records regarding how much of the funds designated for nursing homes owned by the Hospital are being spent for other purposes. While the articles focus on the legal questions involved, they fail to mention more pressing concerns of those whose loved ones live in these nursing homes. Has the care of the nursing home residents been compromised by the failure to finance their care in favor of the new gleaming facilities being built by the hospital? Fighting a technical issue out in the courts is surely not more important than low nursing home pay, bed sores, Covid infections, bedding soaked with bodily waste for long periods, etc. Why do some of our elected officials refuse to respond to letters about this public health issue?
