Fall sports kick into high gear today

HANCOCK COUNTY — Girls golf got underway last week, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls soccer and volleyball join the fray today.

Eleven events — featuring 13 Hancock County fall sports teams — take place on home and road courts, courses and fields.

All four county volleyball teams, four of eight cross country programs, and three of six soccer clubs will have season-opening games, meets and matches.

Girls golf will continue with New Palestine and Mt. Vernon playing in invitationals at Lapel and Franklin, respectively.

By the end of next week all eight fall sports will have started regular-season play.

Boys tennis season begins Monday. All four county football teams scrimmaged, or played in a jamboree, Friday and will play season openers on Friday, Aug. 19.

Along with all county tennis and football programs, New Palestine and Eastern Hancock cross country, New Palestine boys and girls soccer and Mt. Vernon girls soccer will begin quests for wins and titles next week.

Three of today’s events will be played at home.

Greenfield-Central’s volleyball team plays host to Waldron at 10 a.m. The Cougars girls soccer team welcomes Decatur Central at 11:30 a.m. Mt. Vernon boys soccer starts off the year with a home matchup with Hamilton Southeastern at 10:30 a.m.

There are nine more contests scheduled on Monday, including six on home turf.

Eastern Hancock has home events in tennis and volleyball. Mt. Vernon will welcome guests for tennis and girls soccer. New Palestine has a home volleyball match. Greenfield-Central will have a home golf meet at Hawk’s Tail of Greenfield.
