HANCOCK COUNTY — Officials with the Fortville Police Department have identified an Indianapolis man as the shooter from the Mother’s Day incident in May. The crime left another man critically wounded after he was shot in the face.

Tiquest Jaquan Meyers, 24, 5100 block of E. 42nd Street, has been charged with a Level 1 felony count of attempted murder and a Level 5 felony count of criminal recklessness. The case was officially opened in Hancock County Superior Court 1 on June 17 when a warrant was issued for Meyers’ arrest by Magistrate Cody Coombs.

Meyers, who officials say should be considered dangerous, was still at large as of print time Thursday. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call dispatch at 911.

Fortville Chief of Police Patrick Bratton said his department is working closely with officials in Marion County to bring Meyers in as soon as possible to address the charges against him.

“If anyone sees him or knows where he is, don’t approach him, but call 911 right away so we can get him in custody,” Bratton said. “He knows we’re looking for him and so does his family.”

According to police reports, officials were called to the 400 block of Thomas Point Drive, Fortville, Sunday, May 8 with reports of shots fired. Investigators took reports from witnesses who said a car pulled up to a house in the 300 block of Park Creek Lane and opened fire on an individual in the new subdivision.

Bratton said a man was shot on the right side of his face and was listed in critical condition but has since recovered from his injuries. According to the probable cause affidavit, when police arrived on the scene they asked the victim if he knew who shot him and the victim nodded his head “yes.”

An investigation by officials from the FPD linked the victim to Meyers, who was referred to as “Phats,” the affidavit said. Officials were able to find text messages between the two men as well as messages from the victim texting to another, “Phats shot me,” the affidavit states.

The unidentified person replied, “Bro what.” The victim replied to the unidentified person with a picture of his face showing his gunshot injury to the face in the ambulance, the affidavit states.

Fortville officers were also able to identify the car driven by the shooter in the incident as one belonging to Meyers via the flock cameras installed throughout the county that helped officials retrieve a plate number. A dealership confirmed the vehicle was purchased by Meyers, and they also confirmed his cell phone number, the affidavit said.

A witness told officials he observed a male (later identified as Meyers) park his vehicle outside the residence at the 300 block of Park Creek, the affidavit said. The witness then told officials, according to the report, that Myers exited his vehicle from the driver’s side door and began shooting seven to 10 rounds toward the residence where the victim was located in the 300 block of Park Creek. The witness stated three to four more gunshots were fired from the victim toward Meyers, followed by two to three more rounds shot by Meyers standing outside of his vehicle.

The affidavit stated the victim was shot in the right corner of his mouth and suffered a fractured jawbone surrounded by numerous bullet fragments.
