HANCOCK COUNTY — Today culminates the determination of which Democrats and Republicans will be on the ballot in this year’s general election.
In many cases, that’s already been decided due to only one candidate filing. But there are still several contests left to be resolved after all the votes are tallied this evening.
The county offers multiple places throughout the day for registered voters who haven’t participated in early voting over the past several weeks.
Robin Spille, election administrator with the Hancock County Election Office, said 3,790 voters had cast ballots as of noon Monday across early voting locations, mail-in, travel board and military.
Spille, who’s been with the election office for about 12 years, said that’s trending toward the lowest turnout she’s seen.
Primaries typically have low turnouts, she continued, adding this one’s lack of contests only adds to that likelihood.
She said the county sheriff’s position typically draws a lot of voter attention when it’s on the ballot. Incumbent Republican Brad Burkhart remains uncontested this time around, however.
Spille said her colleagues were out Monday preparing voting locations for today.
“Everything’s looking good,” she said. “We’re ready to go.”
While she expects the low turnout trend will continue, she hopes for a late boost. She noted many voted early in the 2020 elections.
“We’re hoping a lot will come out on Election Day this time around,” she said.
Much of that early voting consisted of mail-in ballots amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We had thousands of vote-by-mail because people didn’t want to come out to the polls,” Spille said.
She also encouraged people wanting to volunteer as poll workers in the general election this fall to contact their political party leaders.
