GREENFIELD – Officials from the Greenfield Fire Territory said a man died in an early morning blaze after being pulled from an apartment fire in downtown Greenfield, Monday.

Officials have not released the man’s identity, but he was the only person in the apartment at 18 W. Main Street.

Fire crews responded to a building fire on West Main Street, near North State Road 9 in downtown Greenfield, shortly after midnight, GFT public information officer Corey Breese said.

Crews found heavy smoke and located the man inside an upstairs apartment. The man was pulled from the apartment and in cardiac arrest when transported to Hancock Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead, fire officials said.

The fire was knocked out quickly by firefighters after the man was found. No firefighters were injured. Officials noted there were no working smoke alarms in the apartment.
