NEW PALESTINE — Isaiah Thacker broke the school record in the long jump and was part of the Dragons victorious 4×100-meter relay team in New Palestine’s quadrangular win over Southport, Connersville and Rushville at New Palestine, Tuesday.
Thacker, a junior, jumped a distance of 22-feet, 5-inches, breaking the old mark set by Brady Walden (21-11) in 2017. He joined James O’Dell, Drew Lapenta and Grayson Thomas to win the relay in 44.27 seconds.
Team scores for the event were: New Palestine 83, Southport 63.5, Connersville 59, Rushville 38.5.
Other New Palestine wins came from Sage Halter (pole vault, 11-6), Greg Ratz (shot put, 45-6 1/2), Josh Lambdin (discus, 131-5) and Colin Darley (3200, 10:58.77).
The Dragons are 5-0 in dual meets.
G-C’s Wheeler sets new mark
Greenfield-Central won 11 events and doubled the point total of its competitors in a tri-meet on Tuesday.
Junior Griffen Wheeler won the 800-meter run with a school-record time of 1:56.24.
The Cougars scored 78 points. New Castle and Scecina tied for second with 39 points each.
Cash Looper was part of three victories. He won the 110 hurdles in 16.75 seconds, the pole vault with a height of 10-feet and was part of the first-place 4×100 relay team (44.3 seconds) joining Ian Jack, Michael Runions and Hudson McGuire.
Jack added a win in the 400 with a time of 52.7 seconds. McGuire won the 100 (11.35 seconds).
Liam Brinkruff took the top spot in the 1,600 (4:43) and was part of the winning 4×800 relay team (8:56.47) with Chris Ross, Jacob Presser and Adam Bright.
Other blue ribbon performances came from Gio Vincenzi (long jump, 17-10 ¼), Reese Hill (shot put, 41-11 ½) and Elliot Ryba (high jump, 6-0).
Baseball
Sims near perfect against Delta
Connor Sims threw a no-hitter and struck out 16 in leading Greenfield-Central to its first Hoosier Heritage Conference win of the season.
The Cougars won 5-0 and are 1-2 in HHC play, 2-3 overall.
Sims faced just 23 Eagles. He hit two batters and did not walk anyone.
Greenfield-Central broke open a tight game with a four-run sixth inning. Kirk Knecht hit a two-run triple. Grant Shepherd had a two-hit game.
MV remains unbeaten in HHC
Mt. Vernon improved to 3-0 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference with an 11-1 victory at Shelbyville, Tuesday.
The Marauders had 13 hits and scored at least one run in every inning.
Austin Hear and Joseph Wilson each had three hits. Hear drove in two runs.
Eli Bridenthal fanned nine in six innings to pick up the win. He gave up only four hits.
Girls track
Dragons place second
New Palestine was edged by Southport in a quadrangular meet at NPHS on Tuesday.
The Dragons won a pair of relay races and four other competitions. Southport won with a score of 83, edging New Palestine with 81. Rushville had 41 and Connersville 39.
Anne Bauer, Alaina Doran, Maya Hobbs and Taylor Kelley were winners in the 4×100-meter relay with a time of 54.98 seconds. Ashlyn Sanford, Emily Adam, Morgan Stone and Lexi Baynes crossed the finish line first in the 4×800 relay in 10:53.08.
Other NP winners were: Rylee Hurst (400, 1:02.96), Tylar Whitaker (1600, 5:39.28), Quin Lumbley (shot put, 39-6 ½) and Sydney Miller (discus, 115-5).
New Palestine is 4-1.
Cougars defeat Trojans, Crusaders
In a tri-meet at New Castle, Greenfield-Central scored 89 points and defeated both the host school and Indianapolis Scecina.
Kayana Maroska was part of four wins, while Savannah Lake and Reagan Crouch were both part of three victories.
Maroska won the 100-meter hurdles, 200 dash and joined Lindsey McCord, Natthara Boosamund and Lake in winning the 4×100 relay. She was the anchor on the 4×400 relay team that included Lake, Crouch and Madelyn Mies.
Crouch picked up additional wins in the 300 hurdles and high jump. Lake also won the 100.
Other wins came from Audrey Pechin (400), Carley Means (pole vault) and Grace Cunningham (long jump).
Golf
Royals win season opener
Eastern Hancock started its season Tuesday, at Cardinal Hills Golf Course in Selma, with a victory over New Castle and Muncie Burris.
The Royals finished with a score of 209. New Castle had 227 and Burris did not have enough players for a team score.
Senior Chase Riggs led EH with a 44.
Marauders win over Tigers
In the first match of the season, Mt. Vernon defeated Triton Central 171-208 Tuesday at Hawk’s Tail Golf Course.
