McCORDSVILLE — Law enforcement officers, including those with Hancock County’s SWAT team, peacefully resolved a four-hour incident early Saturday in McCordsville involving a man reported to be armed and intoxicated while making threats to harm himself.

Officers with the McCordsville Police Department were dispatched at about 3:17 a.m. to the 6200 block of North Woodhaven Drive for a mental/emotional patient, according to a news release from the police department.

“We were informed the patient was highly intoxicated, had a firearm, and made threats to harm himself,” the release states. “Officers arrived on scene and established a perimeter around the residence. We were able to get all other occupants safely out of the home and warm in patrol vehicles.”

Officers learned the patient had multiple firearms inside the residence, including rifles, shotguns and handguns, the release continues.

Officers tried to contact the patient by phone and the public address system on their patrol vehicles with no success.

“Trained negotiators spent many hours trying to contact him with no success, the release states. “We were very concerned for the patient’s safety and the safety of the nearby residents.”

The Hancock County Joint Tactical Team responded to the scene and took the patient into custody at about 7:12 a.m.

There were no injuries to the patient, occupants of the home, officers or residents of the neighborhood. The patient was transported by ambulance to Community North Hospital for an evaluation.

“We are extremely grateful and happy the situation was resolved peacefully,” the release states. “We would like to thank all members of the HCJTT, the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, Fortville Police Department, Greenfield Police Department, and New Palestine Police Department for their assistance.”
