NEW PALESTINE

Tim E Swegman (86) passed away peacefully on March 12, 2022, in Dayton Ohio. He was born September 28,1935 in Indianapolis, Indiana, the only son of the late Edwin and Marie (Bennett) Swegman. In 1958, he married Marlene Mayerle. This past February, they celebrated 64 years of marriage. Tim and Marlene moved from New Palestine Indiana to Kettering Ohio in 1997 to be closer to their daughter and her family.

Tim graduated from New Palestine High School, Franklin College (undergrad) and Butler University (master’s in education). He returned to New Palestine and taught middle school social studies for 38 years. Many of his students remember him for his stories of ancient history, his sense of humor, and how he genuinely cared for them. In 1979, he became the head coach for the girls track team at NPHS. During his 17 years of coaching, his teams won 16 conference titles and celebrated many individual awards. In 2006, Tim was inducted into the New Palestine High School Coaches Hall of Fame. “Coach” loved working with his girls and watching their hard work turn into success. He held very fond memories of the girls he coached and often told stories of his coaching days.

In his retirement, the role of grandpa became his primary focus. He was always in attendance for the basketball games, baseball games, swim meets, and track meets of his granddaughter and grandson. With each game and meet came the stat sheet and/or the stopwatch. The coach in him was always present.

Tim would freely give hugs, firm handshakes, fist bumps, and pinky shakes to everyone. He will be remembered for how he loved people and took the opportunity to touch their lives in a special way.

Tim is survived by his wife Marlene (Mayerle) Swegman, daughter Lorrie (Jim) Kohls, grandson Kevin Kohls, granddaughter Lauren (Tyler) Darden and great granddaughter Bexley.
