GREENFIELD — Authorities continue to investigate what they’re describing as a road rage shooting in a restaurant parking lot Monday afternoon.

No one was injured; one person has been arrested.

Mark A. Smith, 62, Greenfield, faces a preliminary charge of criminal recklessness, a Level 5 felony, according to a news release from the Greenfield Police Department.

Officers responded to a 911 call at around 2:24 p.m. Monday from someone who said they had been shot at in the area of Long John Silver’s, 2080 W. Main St. Some type of altercation had apparently occurred in the parking lot.

A suspect reportedly fired multiple shots at the victim’s vehicle and left the scene, the news release said. One vehicle has damage consistent with being hit by gunfire, police reported.

The victim was able to follow the suspect at a safe distance while communicating with 911 dispatchers, providing a vehicle description, but lost sight of the vehicle west of Greenfield on U.S. 40.

Witnesses to the incident were also able to provide vehicle descriptions that assisted in locating the suspect and vehicle.

More information on the incident from the Greenfield Police Department was not available by the Daily Reporter’s deadline Tuesday.

Brent Eaton, Hancock County prosecutor, said Tuesday afternoon that more investigation remains before filing any formal charges.

“We’re working with the Greenfield Police Department to make sure we have all the evidence possible so we can make a well-informed decision,” Eaton said.

He added the prosecutor’s office filed a 72-hour hold on Smith to remain at the Hancock County Jail.

The news release states that the incident serves as a reminder to remain calm while driving.

“Things happen beyond our control but we always control how we respond to these situations,” the release states. “Don’t use your horn, make hand gestures, yell or anything else that could lead to further confrontation. Simply drive responsibly and put distance between you and the other driver. If you are confronted, do your best to safely leave the situation and call 911 as soon as it is safe to do so.”

The Greenfield Police Department was assisted by the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, Indiana State Police, New Palestine Police Department and Cumberland Metropolitan Police Department.
