GREENFIELD — Hancock County’s elementary schools received a donation of 20 picture books from the Friends of the Hancock County Public Library. Eleven sets of 20 books were donated this spring, one to each of the county’s elementary schools.

The books, appropriate for students from kindergarten to second grade, have received the Young Hoosier Book Award. The annual literary award is chosen from a list of books that are nominated by members of the Indiana Library Federation. At the end of each school year, students are encouraged to vote for their favorite nominee. This draws attention toward books of value and encourages “self-selected” reading among students.

When the Friends’ board was looking for a project this year, they kept in mind their mission to encourage literacy and promote the library. The group decided that picture books would make the most impact. Young Hoosier books are used by many school librarians in lesson plans, particularly at the elementary level.

The Friends of HCPL is a non-profit group of volunteers that raises money through the sale of donated books and other media. They use the proceeds to sponsor free public concerts and children’s performers at the library. The group also provides support for special projects, such as the popular children’s playhouse at the Sugar Creek Branch in New Palestine.

Those interested in browsing Young Hoosier books may do so by heading to the Greenfield or New Palestine branch of the HCPL; both locations have special displays of Young Hoosier nominees. More information can also be found at www.ilfonline.org/page/YHBA.
