HANCOCK COUNTY — An argument between two relatives erupted in gunfire, with one man being shot by another man who lived at the same residence, officials from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department said.

Sheriff’s officials are still investigating the shooting of Christopher Gregg, 20, on Friday, Jan. 22, after he was hit twice by gunfire. Detectives have identified Cody Gregg, 33, his uncle, as the other man involved in the shooting.

No charges have been filed.

“We’re still trying to sort out the circumstances to see what happened,” said Maj. Robert Campbell, chief deputy of the sheriff’s department. “It was a family dispute, and they both had guns. We’re just trying to determine if there will be any charges or not.”

An update on Christopher Gregg’s condition was not available at the Daily Reporter’s deadline on Monday, Jan. 25.

Deputies went to a home in the 5600 block of South County Road 500E at 2:22 p.m. Friday after reports that a person had been shot, according to a news release.

A report states a caller told officials he had been shot twice by his uncle.

Upon arrival, deputies encountered multiple people outside of the residence, including the shooting victim, Christopher Gregg. Despite his wounds, he was able to walk toward deputies.

He was taken to an Indianapolis hospital. He was conscious, alert and communicating as he was being treated by medics, officials said in the news release.

Initial information obtained by deputies indicated the shooting stemmed from a dispute between the two men, who both reside at the residence.

Deputies collected multiple weapons from the home. Officials noted Cody Gregg has been cooperative with investigators and is providing information on the incident.

“We’re trying to determine who the aggressor is in this whole situation,” Campbell said.
