The New Palestine boys basketball team used a strong defensive effort to down Richmond 71-47 Saturday night.
The Dragons improved their record to 3-1 with their third straight victory, all by double-digits.
Strong balance, defense and a 16-2 first-half run pushed the Dragons’ lead to 27-12. Richmond never closed within single digits the rest of the way.

Steele Brasfield launched the run with a 3-pointer just ahead of the first-half buzzer, capping a nine-point first quarter that helped push the Dragons to a 14-10 lead.
Blaine Nunnally scored five second-quarter points to help push the lead to 27-15 by halftime. The Dragons extended the lead further in the third, with Luke Burgess and Nunnally scoring four points each as NP outscore Richmond 14-10 in the third quarter to take a 41-25 lead.
The Dragons scored a season-high 30 fourth-quarter points, with Nunnally hitting two 3-pointers and scoring 10 of his game-high 19 points.
Brasfield added 15 points. Matt Brown scored nine. Luke Burgess and Damon Hockett each tallied eight points off the bench. Kyle Bastian scored six, Eli Stephens four and C.J. Oliver two.
The Dragons return to conference play Friday at home against New Castle.
Royals return with
win over Tri-Central
The Eastern Hancock boys basketball team returned from quarantine with a solid 62-53 victory over Tri-Central on Saturday at home.
The Royals trailed 17-13 after the first quarter, but a 23-point second put unbeaten Eastern Hancock (2-0) in control the rest of the way.
Silas Spaulding led the Royals with a team-high 18 points on 5 of 14 shooting. Cole Rainbolt had 13 points, followed by Jacob Spaulding with 11.
Landon O’Neal finished with seven points and Cameron Wise had five.
The Royals knocked down 11 of 28 jumpers from 3-point range, led by Silas Spaulding’s four and Rainbolt’s three.
Drew White and Rainbolt set the tone with five rebounds apiece. Jacob Spaulding dished out six assists with two steals and four rebounds.
Wrestling
Dragons sweep at Roncalli Duals
The New Palestine wrestling team posted a sweep of the Roncalli Duals Saturday, winning all four matches.
NP beat Noblesville 60-15 in the opening match. The Dragons then beat Scecina 57-21, host Roncalli 39-30 and finished the day with a 62-23 victory over Seymour.
Four Dragons were undefeated on the day. Christian White was 4-0 with one fall at 138 pounds. Richard Clevenger was also 4-0 with a fall at 195. Porter May won all four matches at 220, while Tucker Keevers also swept the day with two falls.
Jack Rossell (106), Sydney DeLois (113), Darin Johnson (145), Zach Hoyt (152), Glass (160) and Porter Keevers (170) all went 3-1.
Swimming
Dragons fall to East Central
The New Palestine swimming teams competed at Saturday’s East Central Relays, which became a two-team meet as others canceled. The Dragons boys fell 156-104, while the girls fell 138-118.
Sullie Leavell, Katelyn Trimpe, Kyleigh Turner and Adrianna Huston won the 100-yard freestyle relay. The quartet also won the 200 free relay and 400 free relay. Trimpe and Huston also won the 1,000 free relay.
Finishing second were Bailey Young, Lillie Poag, Kayleigh Wright and Olivia Melangton in the 200 medley relay; Leavell, Poag and Young in the 400 medley relay; Anneliese Weilhammer, Poag, Turner and Young in the 375 crescendo relay; Wright, Anne Bauer and Bailey Whitaker in the 150 butterfly relay; Whitaker, Weilhammer, Melangton and Wright in the 200 free relay; Emma Buergelin, Sarina Donahue and Young in the 150 backstroke relay; and Whitaker, Rachel Wright and Poag in the 150 breaststroke relay.
The NP boys finished second in each event.
Quincy Shirk, Aidan Kingery, Liam Fuller and Chase Martin were runners-up in the 200 medley relay. Ben Miesse, Kyle Ellis, Shirk and Jack Schwartz finished second in the 100 free relay.
Also placing second were Kingery, Jack Anderson and Fuller in the 400 medley relay; Ellis and Eli Kleine in the 1,000 free relay, Kingery, Darrell Drake, Martin and Miesse in the 375 crescendo relay; Kleine, Schwartz and Fuller in the 150 butterfly relay; Miesse, Ellis, Martin and Schwartz in the 200 free relay; Shirk, Kleine and Fuller in the 150 backstroke relay; Martin, Anderson and Kingery in the 150 breaststroke relay; and Ellis, Kleine, Miesse and Schwartz in the 400 free relay.
