Greenfield woman dies in crash on I-65

LEBANON — A driver going the wrong way on Interstate 65 in Boone County crashed his vehicle head-on into another car, killing a 22-year-old woman from Greenfield, Lebanon police said early today.

Nicole Watson was traveling north on I-65 south of Lebanon in Boone County when her car, a Saturn Ion, was struck head-on by a GMC Terrain SUV driven by Bill Rainwater, 83, of Indianapolis. Rainwater was traveling south on the wrong side of the highway, according to a news release from the Lebanon Police Department.

The crash happened shortly before 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 14. Officers already were responding to a report of a wrong-way driver who had been spotted at the 138 mile marker. The crash occurred at the 136.2 mile marker.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by the Boone County coroner’s office.

All northbound lanes of I-65 in the vicinity were shut down while the crash was investigated. The investigation by Boone County authorities is continuing.
