The New Palestine boys basketball team used a big second half to pull away to a 73-39 victory Saturday at Rushville.
Steele Brasfield scored a career-high 23 points and Eli Stephens added 11 in the Dragons’ victory.
The Dragons wasted little time getting started. Steele Brasfield scored 10 points in the opening quarter, while Luke Burgess and Matt Brown scored four each to stake NP to an 18-5 early lead. Rushville scored the last basket of the quarter to cut the lead to 11 after one.
The Lions outscored NP 12-7 in the second quarter to cut the Dragons’ lead to 25-19 at the halftime break, but the Dragons started the third on an 11-2 run and never looked back.
Brasfield tallied three second-half 3-pointers en route to his career high. In addition to the two double-figure scorers, Ian Stephens scored nine, Damon Hockett and C.J. Oliver seven each, Burgess six, Brown four and Kyle Bastian and Jaret Whitaker three each.
Jerron Taylor led Rushville with 20 points.
The Dragons (1-1) next play Friday at Greenfield-Central.
Other scores and results
The Mt. Vernon boys basketball team defeated Triton Central 80-45 on Saturday … the victory improved the Marauders record to 3-1 … Mt. Vernon has won three straight games after opening the season on Nov. 24 with a 77-64 loss to Lawrence Central.

Dragons down Delta
for HHC victory
The New Palestine girls basketball team used a strong second half Saturday to pull away to a 46-29 road victory over Delta.
The Dragons led 19-15 at halftime, but used a 10-1 third-quarter run to pull ahead 31-18. Delta never closed the lead within eight from then on.
Isabella Gizzi led the way for the Dragons with 13 points. Addi Jones tallied 12, including eight in the fourth quarter. Faith Hensel scored eight points. Anna Ackerman tallied six, Grace Marshall two and Alaina Miller one.
Abby Bamidele led Delta with 10 points.
The Dragons are now 5-2 on the season and 2-0 in HHC play.
Swimming
New Palestine swimmers sweep at Perry Meridian
Both New Palestine swimming and diving teams won duals at Perry Meridian Thursday.
The girls team edged the Falcons 96-89. The Dragons boys won 101-84.
New Palestine’s girls swept the relay races.
The 200-yard medley relay team of Katelyn Trimpe, Lillie Poag, Sullie Leavell and Kyleigh Turner won in 2:09.94.
Adrianna Huston, Turner, Trimpe and Leavell touched first in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:53.75.
They wrapped up the meet with the contingent of Trimpe, Turner, Leavell and Huston winning the 400 freestyle relay in 4:07.07.
Individually, Huston, a freshman, won both the 200 freestyle (2:08.14) and 500 freestyle (5:50.14). Classmate Leavell won the 50 freestyle (27.42).
Trimpe won the 100 freestyle (1:02.15) and Kayleigh Wright was first in the 100 butterfly (1:13.30).
The boys swept relay races, too.
Quincy Shirk, Aidan Kingery, Liam Fuller and Jack Schwartz were victorious in the 200 medley relay (1:54.49).
Chase Martin, Shirk, Ben Miesse and Schwartz teamed up to win the 200 freestyle relay (1:39.41).
Eli Kleine, Kyle Ellis, Martin and Miesse were the quartet to take the 400 freestyle relay (3:48.54).
The Dragons added four other individual wins. Miesse was the top finisher in the 200 freestyle (2:04.87). Schwartz won the 100 butterfly (59.68). Kleine was the winner in the 100 backstroke (1:09.83) and Kingery was the first to finish the 100 breaststroke (1:11.45).
Marauders sweep past Delta
The Mt. Vernon boys and girls swim teams swept past Hoosier Heritage Conference foe Delta on Thursday.
The Marauders boys won 103-82. The girls won 91-81.
On the boys side, individual victories went to Brady Gray, Logan Schomaker and Evan Flick.
The MV 200 medley relay team of Aidan Murphy, Aiden Tierney, Gray and Flick won. Flick, Murphy, Schomaker and Tierney teamed to win the 400 freestyle relay.
Individual winners in the girls races included Annelise Hiner, Maddie Moore and Abby Crouch. Hiner, Crouch, Fiona Wray and Moore won the 400 freestyle relay.
Wrestling
Cougars take third at Avon
The Greenfield-Central wrestling team finished 1-2 at the Avon Duals on Saturday to finish third overall.
Sixth-ranked Warren Central won the event with No. 2 Cathedral taking second. Ninth-ranked Avon was fourth behind the Cougars.
Greenfield-Central defeated host Avon 46-31. They lost to Cathedral 59-9 and to Warren Central 68-0.
