GREENFIELD

Kathryn Mary Unger, age 78, of Greenfield, passed away Tuesday, October 13, 2020. She was born in Elmira, New York on October 16, 1941 to Gerald Layton Smith and Theresa Eileen (Mingo) Smith. She attended Sullivan High School. Kathryn graduated from Union-Endicott High School in Endicott, New York in 1960. She married Paul “Lou” Unger on December 29, 1962 at St. Mary’s Church in Sullivan, Indiana.

She worked for Marsh Supermarket as a florist for 18 years before retiring in 2005. Kathryn was a member of the Red Hats Society in Greenfield. She liked listening to 50’s music, going out with friends for lunch, reading women’s magazines, crossword puzzles, and watching birds and squirrels. Kathryn loved spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by her sons, Christopher Layton Unger, Michael David (Suzanna) Unger, and Joseph Erwin Unger, all of Greenfield; brothers, Gerald “Bud” (Joan) Smith of Vincennes, and David (Tina) Smith of Linton; sister-in-law, Claudia Smith; five grandchildren, Jordan, Chasity, Macy, Jesse, and Zoe; two great-grandchildren, Elijah and Layken; and many loving cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gerald Layton Smith and Theresa Eileen (Mingo) Smith; husband, Paul “Lou” Unger; son, Paul Lewis Unger; sister, Jean (Smith) Rothwell; brother-in-law, Jerry; and brother, Richard “Dick” Smith.

Visitation will be held on Monday, October 19, 2020, from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A Celebration of Kathryn’s Life will follow visitation, beginning at 7:00 p.m. As a reminder, masks are required in public indoor spaces and please practice social distancing.
