HANCOCK COUNTY — A traffic stop by a sheriff’s deputy led to the arrest of a California woman who is now facing felony drug charges.

Mae Sheree Davis, 42, Chino Hills, California, has been charged with a Level 4 felony count of possession of methamphetamine; a Level 6 felony county of maintaining a common nuisance; a Level 6 felony count of possession of a narcotic drug; and two misdemeanors for possession of marijuana and paraphernalia.

The most serious charge carries a sentence of up to 12 years.

According to a probable cause affidavit, a sheriff’s deputy stopped a car on Wednesday, Sept. 16, near the 112-mile marker on eastbound Interstate 70 for following another vehicle too closely.

The deputy became suspicious that drugs might be in the car, and as he questioned the driver, Davis said she had a previously suspended driver’s license. She then told the officer she had methamphetamine in her purse and marijuana in the car.

A search found a bag with 12.7 grams of a substance that tested positive for methamphetamine; a glass jar containing approximately 7 to 10 grams of green plant material that was determined to be marijuana; a glass pipe; and a plastic container labeled as morphine with approximately 30 grams of liquid substance inside.

Davis appeared Friday, Sept. 18, in Hancock County Superior Court 1. Judge Marie Castetter set a $50,000 surety bond. Davis has a pretrial conference set for early November. She was still in jail at the Daily Reporter’s deadline on Monday, Sept. 21.
