HANCOCK COUNTY — With schools back in session after an abnormally long absence from classrooms, the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department has received several complaints about drivers not observing the stop arms on school buses.

Lt. Donnie Munden said drivers should remember the importance of stopping for school buses picking up or dropping off children, both for their safety and because it is required by law. Drivers who are given a ticket for failing to do so can receive both a fine and points on their driver’s license.

On a four-lane road, drivers going in both directions are still required to stop when a school bus does, unless the road is divided by a median or other physical barrier.
