Eastern Hancock cancels jamboree event

The Mid-Eastern Conference football schools elected to cancel its scheduled High School Football Jamboree event for this month.

The football jamboree was planned to be held on Friday, Aug. 15 at Eastern Hancock High School. The event would have included host Eastern Hancock, Shenandoah, Wes-Del and Monroe Central.

The cancellation was announced on the Eastern Hancock Athletics Twitter feed this past weekend, stating the following: “In our current climate, we felt it was not worth the risk of bringing 4 teams/communities together. We will be ready to go for Week 1!”

Eastern Hancock is scheduled to open the 2020 regular season on Friday, Aug. 21 at home against Alexandria. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Head coach Doug Armstrong’s Royals finished the 2019 season with an 8-3 record.

Former Tribe starter returns to bullpen

INDIANAPOLIS — With both rotation and bullpen experience under his belt in the minor leagues, right-handed pitcher and former Indianapolis Indian Cody Ponce made his Major League debut in relief Sunday afternoon at Chicago.

Ponce is the second member of the 2019 Triple-A squad to make his debut, following RHP JT Brubaker.

The 26-year-old joined Pittsburgh’s roster just hours before Pittsburgh’s Sunday afternoon game vs. the Cubs to offset injuries to RHPs Mitch Keller and Michael Feliz, who were both placed on the 10-day injured list. Ponce later made his debut in extra innings.

Ponce began the 2019 season in the Milwaukee Brewers system. On July 29, he was traded to Pittsburgh in exchange for RHP Jordan Lyles.

During MLB Spring Training, Ponce made four relief appearances for the Pirates. He was named to the taxi squad as part of Pittsburgh’s 60-man roster and spent Summer Camp in Altoona.
