FORTVILLE — Early-morning fog may have played a factor in a two-vehicle crash Monday on Fortville Pike that left a Greenfield woman fighting for her life, officials from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department said.

The crash occurred around 7:30 a.m. Monday, June 22, on Fortville Pike near the intersection of County Road 600N.

A nearby resident heard the collision; the person reported a woman was trapped inside one of the vehicles.

Deputies found both vehicles — a 2007 Honda Fit and a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado — in the front yard of a residence on the northwest corner of the intersection. The lone occupant of the Honda, Alisha Scudder, 23, Greenfield, appeared to be badly injured.

A helicopter ambulance could not fly in to assist first-responders because of the fog in the area, so Scudder was transported by ground ambulance to St. Vincent Hospital. She was listed in critical condition in the intensive care unit at the Daily Reporter’s deadline on Monday.

The driver of the Silverado, who was the only occupant in his vehicle, was identified as David Garvey, 27, Greenfield. He was not injured in the crash and was able to give investigators an account about the accident.

A home security camera also captured the crash on video. The video confirmed the foggy conditions, and it also shows the Honda, which was westbound, was facing a stop sign and pulled into the path of the northbound Silverado, which did not have to stop at the intersection.

The result was a right-angle crash with the truck smashing into the Honda’s driver-side door.

Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor, said Capt. Robert Harris, public information officer of the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department.

Fortville Pike north County Road 600N was closed for just over two hours while the Hancock County Fatal Accident Crash Team investigated.
