INDIANAPOLIS — Hancock County’s unemployment rate fell to 10% in May, down from 14.1% a month earlier but still towering above the mark a year earlier.
The county’s jobless rate ranked 66th-highest in the state. Howard County, home to Kokomo, had the highest unemployment rate, at 21.8%. Daviess County in southwestern Indiana had the lowest, at 5.6%.
According to figures released Monday, June 22, by the state’s workforce development office, a total of 3,934 people in Hancock County were considered unemployed in May. That compares with 5,321 a month earlier, when the full impact of COVID-19-fueled job losses started to be felt, according to the state report.
In May 2019, a total of 1,061 Hancock County residents were jobless, putting the unemployment rate at 2.6%
Indiana’s rate was 11.9% in May.
