SHIRLEY — A Markleville man accused of beating another man and shooting up his own car has been arrested and charged with multiple felony and misdemeanor crimes following an incident in Shirley earlier this week.

Caleb Edward Dane Howard, 22, 9000 block of North County Road 100E, Markleville, was arrested Monday, June 15, and charged with a Level 6 felony count of pointing a firearm at another; a Level 6 felony count of battery resulting in moderate bodily injury; a Level 6 felony count of criminal recklessness committed with a deadly weapon, and a Class A misdemeanor count of conversion.

According to a probable cause affidavit, the Shirley Police Department was called Monday to the 500 block of Pennsylvania Street in Shirley, where a man was outside shooting a gun.

Police found Howard in the front yard; they also found a handgun with an empty magazine a few feet from him.

The victim told officials Howard had come inside his residence, picked up a gun belonging to the victim and went outside and started firing it at his own vehicle. When the man approached Howard to get him to stop, Howard struck the victim in the face with his closed fist, the affidavit said. The victim told police he also was struck with a metal pole as well as the butt of the gun.

Shirley police and deputies from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department found a total of six bullet holes in Howard’s vehicle, the affidavit said. The victim told officials Howard had also pointed the gun at him and threatened him during the altercation.

The victim told police Howard said he would kill him if he had another bullet in the gun after he had emptied the magazine into his own car, the affidavit said.

Howard made his initial appearance Wednesday, June 17, in Hancock County Superior Court 2, where a not-guilty plea was entered on his behalf and a $2,000 cash bond was set. Judge Dan Marshall also issued a no-contact order.

Howard is slated for a pretrial conference in August. He was still listed as an inmate at the Hancock County Jail at the Daily Reporter’s deadline Thursday, June 18.
