Vernon Township starts its ambulance service

VERNON TOWNSHIP — It’s a new year and a new ambulance service for Vernon Township.

The township’s in-house service got an early start with its first shift on New Year’s Eve.

Township officials voted in August 2019 to expand the Vernon Township Fire Department to include ambulance service effective by the beginning of 2020.

For Vernon Township residents, the only difference is the provider. Service continues to be provided by an advanced life support-certified ambulance stationed 24/7 at the fire station on Vitality Drive in Fortville.

The township owns the ambulance and determined it’d be more fiscally responsible to use it, as it would no longer have to pay a provider and would get to keep revenue from billings.

Seals Ambulance, which Priority Ambulance later bought, served Vernon Township for about 50 years.
