ST. LEON — For the second time in just over two weeks, Greenfield-Central and Shelbyville met in a critical boys soccer match on Tuesday.
The result was much the same. The Cougars won the first game, 1-0, helping secure themselves another undefeated run in conference and Hoosier Heritage Conference title.
Tuesday the Cougars met the Bears again, this time in a sectional opener at East Central High School. Greenfield-Central shut out Shelbyville again, advancing to tonight’s semifinal round with a 3-0 win.
The Cougars got on the board with 18 minutes left in the first half, when Caleb Mundell scored with a header off a John Halvorsen free kick. Mundell doubled the lead himself with 22 minutes remaining in the game, and Zack Bell added the final tally eight minutes later, heading in a Tyler Murphy free kick.
Greenfield-Central advances to tonight’s 8 p.m. sectional semifinal against host East Central, who topped Connersville, 1-0, in Tuesday’s first match. It will be the second meeting of the season between the teams, as the Cougars topped the Trojans, 2-0, on Aug. 24. The winner will play either New Palestine or Mt. Vernon, who play in the 6 p.m. game, in Saturday’s sectional final at 2 p.m.
