YORKTOWN — A big halftime deficit was too much for Greenfield-Central to overcome Friday in a 42-6 Hoosier Heritage Conference loss at Yorktown.
The Cougars dropped to 1-6 overall and 1-4 in the HHC. Yorktown improved to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the conference.
Greenfield-Central was down 28-0 at the break. Yorktown pulled away in the second quarter, outscoring the Cougars 21-0.
“We just didn’t come out with a lot of fire and passion, and they were able to capitalize on our mistakes,” Greenfield-Central coach Travis Nolting said.
Trailing 42-0, the Cougars scored on a long run by quarterback Lance McKee, but the junior left with an injury on the play.
“We made some mistakes,” Nolting added. “Any time we would have some success, we would follow up with a fumble or a false start. We just didn’t come out ready to play, and that’s my responsibility. We’re going to get that fixed.”
On the defensive side, end Joey Roland led the way with a pair of sacks and tackles for loss.
Greenfield-Central is back in action next Friday with a 7:30 p.m. home game against Delta.
