INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana State Fair band contest will take place on the fair’s opening day, Aug. 2

After a summer of practice and planning, 40 bands from across the state will converge on the Hoosier Lottery Grandstand to compete in three classes, as well as for the honor of being named Indiana’s best band.

Indiana State Fair Band Day preliminaries start at 9 a.m.; tickets are $6 for adults (ages 13 and older) and $2 for children. Finals begin at 8 p.m., with tickets $10 for adults and $4 for children. Ages 5 and under are admitted for free. Tickets may be purchased online at indianastatefair.com or on-site on Aug. 2 at the Hoosier Lottery Grandstand Box Office.

In addition to moving Band Day to opening day, the fair also has a new band day coordinator, Douglas R. Fletcher, who has a long history with the competition. He currently serves as the director of operations for Purdue University Bands and Orchestras.
