FORTVILLE — Mt. Vernon Community School Corp. recently celebrated two days of Unified Champions field days with competition, teamwork and awards.
Unified Champions is a program that engages schools in creating a climate of inclusion, acceptance, respect and human dignity for all students. Students with and without disabilities compete on the same teams to keep an inclusive environment where every student participates regardless of athletic, intellectual, ambulatory or functional abilities.
The Mini-Marauder Preschool, the three elementary schools and Mt. Vernon Middle School played host to Unified Champion field days. Students walked around the track and then rotated through various activities located in the infield. Activities included walking on a balance beam, running relay races, kicking a soccer ball around cones and jumping over obstacles.

The middle school and high school events started with a parade at the middle school with students lining the halls and cheering for all participants. The parade was followed by a lap around the track and activities where participants were awarded ribbons. The Mt. Vernon Middle School track team ran the event with relay races and throwing contests.
The event ended with the awarding of the Andrew Mize Unified Champions Participant of the Year Award to Frank Foland. This annual award honors Mt. Vernon student Andrew Mize, who died unexpectedly in April 2018.
