Greenfield-Central moves on $3.5-million land purchase

GREENFIELD — The Greenfield-Central Schools Board voted in a special meeting Friday to purchase a 93-acre plot of land near the high school in preparation for future growth and development.

The piece of property, located in the 700 block of North Franklin Street, cost the school district $3.5 million to be paid over the next three years.

Currently, there aren’t set plans for what the property will be used for, Superintendent Harold Olin said. But the district recognizes that Greenfield is a growing community, and whether it’s in the form of a new school building, new athletic fields or something else, a need for the property will surely arise, he said.

The school district has been in talks to purchase the land from its current owners, Robert and Beverly Frost, since about 2010, Olin said.

The board called a special meeting for Friday morning to finalize the purchase. Three members were present — Retta Livengood, Hillary Close and Dan Brown — and they voted unanimously to approve the land contract.
