Eastern Hancock’s Joey Starrett shut down Wes-Del on Thursday, throwing a complete game shutout and leading the Royals to a 12-0 victory.

Eastern Hancock got on the board in the first inning with an Addison True RBI single. They tallied five runs in the second inning, led by singles from A.J. Muegge and Starrett, a walk by True, and a fielder’s choice by Andrew Knoblock.

Starrett pitched all five innings, allowing four hits and no runs while striking out six.

Eastern Hancock racked up 11 hits. Starrett, Muegge, and Russell Locker each had multiple hits for the Royals. Knoblock led the Royals with three RBIs.

Softball

Marauders’ big inning freezes out New Castle

Mt. Vernon used a big fourth inning Thursday to get past New Castle, coming from behind to win 12-7.

The Marauders fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first, and were down 3-1 after three. But a seven-run fourth inning, followed by four more in the fifth, pushed Mt. Vernon to a win.

Cassidy Parker led the Marauders offense with four RBIs.

Royals get jump start against Triton Central

Eastern Hancock struck first, scoring twice in the opening frame, but a six-run second inning for Triton Central was too much for the Royals to overcome in a 13-4 defeat Thursday.

Micah Black went 3 for 4 for the Royals with a home run. Bailey Stephens added two hits for Eastern Hancock, who was outhit for the game 15-7 by the Tigers. Eriel Truitt led the Royals with two RBIs.

Eastern Hancock boys, girls sweep invitational

Eastern Hancock’s boys and girls both won their home invitational on Thursday, with the boys scoring 142 to win a seven-team field and the girls scoring 156, besting a six-team field. Herron was runner-up in both, with a 107 for the boys and a 116 for the girls.

Event winners for the boys were Skyler Schrope in the 800 and 1,600 meters, Skyler Sexton in the 110-meter hurdles, Kyle Moore in the long jump, and the 4×800 relay team of Will Huffman, Daniel Campbell, Cayden Sotelo and Schrope.

Girls winners were Kayla Fancher in the 100 meters, Taylor Stine in the 400 meters, Liberty Durham in the 3,200 meters, Bailey Allen in the shot put, and the 4×100 relay team of Fancher, Lexi Lewman, Aly Spaulding and Stine.

The boys team had five second-place finishes, while the girls had eight.

Eastern Hancock’s Schrope and Stine were named Athletes of the Meet.

Golf

Freshman cards 35 as Marauders split match

Mt. Vernon split Thursday’s 3-way match with Hamilton Southeastern and Lawrence North, finishing second. The Marauders put up their best nine-hole score of the season with 150. Hamilton Southeastern also shot a 150, and takes the match with the fifth man score of 40 over Mt. Vernon’s 42. Lawrence North finished third with a 165.

Freshman Sam McWilliams was co-medalist, carding an even-par round of 35. Seniors Xavier Dunham and Max Heitman both shot a 38. Sophomore John Husar rounded out the 150 total adding a 39. Blake Johnson shot a 42.

Still rolling: Royals top Cambridge City Lincoln

Eastern Hancock followed up Tuesday’s 179-226 win against Blue River Valley with another victory Thursday, topping Cambridge City Lincoln.

The Royals picked up the win against the Golden Eagles by a score of 194-221.

New Palestine gets win against Beech Grove

The New Palestine golf team posted a victory Thursday, beating Beech Grove 175-215 at Hawk’s Tail.

Quinn Dobbins was the low medalist with a 40 to lead the Dragons. Elijah Domogala shot a 42, Josh Shinkle a 44 and Peyton Miller a 49.

Marauders dig deep in conference contest

Mt. Vernon traveled to Yorktown on Thursday and grinded out a 3-2 win against their conference foe.

At No. 2 singles, Lydia Ruegsegger rolled 6-1, 6-0, and Kaleigh Helm rolled at No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-0.

The match came down to No. 2 doubles team Maeve Laughlin and Kaitlyn Dunlavy. They won the first set 6-4, lost the second set 4-6 and pulled out the win with a 6-3 third set victory. The win moves the Marauders to 4-1 in conference and 7-2 overall.

No. 2 singles player leads Cougars victory

Greenfield-Central hosted New Castle on Thursday, edging out a 3-2 victory.

No. 2 singles player Avery Spencer earned the first point for the Cougars with a 6-1, 6-0 win. After losing her first game of the night, she won 12 straight games to beat her opponent.

She was followed by No. 2 doubles duo Erin Wright and Aly Proper, who won 6-1, 6-4. The third point came from No. 1 singles Lindsey McCord, who took complete control in her second set to win 6-3, 6-0 and earn the victory for her team.

Dragons blanked by Delta in HHC faceoff

New Palestine was beaten 5-0 by the visiting Delta Eagles on Thursday in a Hoosier Heritage conference match.

At No. 1 singles, Dragons junior Megan Long put up a spirited fight before losing 6-1, 6-2 to Eagles junior Ellie Snider.

At No. 2 singles, senior Ivey Simmons lost to Delta senior Emma Snider 6-2, 6-1. At No. 3 singles, junior Caylie Almond was beaten 6-1, 6-1 by Delta freshman Tynan Dishman.

Mew Palestine’s No. 1 doubles pairing of juniors Josee King and Claire Cherry lost to Eagles seniors Lexie Manor and Grace Belangee 6-0, 6-1.

The Dragons’ No. 2 doubles combination of Sheridan Schrowe and Ashley Truman went down 6-3, 6-1 to Delta senior Kortney Helm and junior Mayzie Hinkle.
