Katja “Kitty” Rhoday Hawkersmith, 92, of Greenfield, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016, at Hancock Regional Hospice. She was born on June 21, 1923, in Mogielna, Ukraine.
She first married Harry Norman Rhoday and he preceded her in death and later married Ed Hawkersmith.
She worked for Indiana Box as an operator, for over 30 years, before retiring in 1986. Kitty was a member of the Greenfield American Legion Auxiliary and loved to play bingo and was an avid gardener.
Kitty is survived by her daughter, Irene (Greg) Wheeler of Greenfield; two grandchildren, Katja (Rob) Stine and Greg (Amanda) Wheeler; three great- grandchildren, Bradley, Sophia and Adele; special niece, Beth Jessup and lifelong friend, Cathy Conaway.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Harry N. Rhoday and Ed Hawkersmith; son, Charles Franklin Rhoday; six brothers and one sister.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016, at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service will take place immediately following the visitation at 1 p.m. Chaplain Katherine Murray will be officiating. Burial will follow at Park Cemetery in Greenfield.
