Tax season opens; officials encourage residents to file electronically

INDIANAPOLIS — Tax season officially launched Tuesday as the Indiana Department of Revenue and the Internal Revenue Service began processing 2016 tax returns.

The departments are encouraging residents to use electronic filing to expedite the process. Nearly 2 million Hoosier tax filers qualify to file their federal and state income taxes online for free. Visit freefile.dor.in.gov to see if you qualify.

If you have questions about your individual income taxes, call 317-232-2240 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

The deadline to file taxes is April 18.
