Stephen A. Free, 96, of Greenfield, died on Monday, Dec. 7, 2015, at Golden Living Center Brandywine, Greenfield. He was born on Feb 5, 1919, in Spencer, Ind., as the son of James A. and Juel M. (Cochrane) Free.
He was a graduate of Indiana University and served in the Navy during WWII. After the war he graduated from the Indiana University School of Law, and practiced in Greenfield until his retirement. Mr. Free was a member of the Hancock County Bar Association, American Legion and Elks.
Stephen is survived by his daughter, Susan (Roy) McAmis of Greenfield; granddaughters, Elizabeth McAmis of Greenfield, Katherine (Sean) Gallagher of San Diego and Sarah McAmis of Greenfield; daughter-in-law, Kathleen (Stephen) Free of Hanover, Ind. and beloved great- grandchildren, James, Emily and Vivian.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James A. and Juel M. (Cochrane) Free; wife, Marian (Combs) Free and son, Stephen H. Free.
A memorial celebration is planned for a later date.
