GREENFIELD — Students at Greenfield-Central High School were evacuated Friday morning after a power outage.

Greenfield Central Junior High, Greenfield Intermediate and Harris Elementary schools also experienced a power outage, but to a lesser extent than the high school, officials said. Students at those schools were not evacuated, and full power was restored promptly.

High school students were evacuated around 10 a.m., but returned after about 10 minutes when backup generators restored power to the building, said Harold Olin, superintendent.

The generators provided enough power to run the school’s lights, fire safety system, Web server and intercom system, Olin said.

Administrators said they’re not sure where the power outage started, or why it affected all four schools.

At press time, the high school was still operating on backup power, but students completed the school day on a normal schedule.
