Marauders blank Tigers

The Mt. Vernon boys soccer team bided its time Tuesday night before the offense erupted for four goals in the second half to defeat rival Yorktown 5-0.

The win improved the Marauders’ Hoosier Heritage Conference record to 3-1 and their overall record to 8-1.

Josh Powell recorded his sixth shutout of the season.

The goals went to Matthew Pruitt, Carson Jones, Luke Yeadon, Matt Schafer and Trevor Bond.

Assists were credited to Jeffrey Boxberger, Timmy Clone, Jarret Whitehouse and Josh Williams.

The Marauders travel to Greenfield-Central tonight.

Dragons conquer Trojans

The New Palestine Dragons grabbed the lead and never relinquished, defeating HHC foe New Castle 3-1 on Tuesday.

The win upped the soccer team’s record to 6-1-1 and pushed its conference standing to 3-0.

Nick Martin and Holton Gwaltney scored their goals in the opening half before Buzz Wells supplied the third goal in the second half.

Assists went to Jordon Harrison and Quinn Johnson.

Cougars fall to Franklin

The Greenfield-Central Cougars hung with the Franklin Grizzly Cubs through the first half in a 1-1 tie but lost hold of the match in the second half Tuesday night.

Franklin poured in four unanswered goals to win 5-1 and hand Greenfield-Central its first loss since Aug. 22.

The Cougars trailed 1-0 midway through the first half until a Luke Tuttle goal off a Westyn Wood cross pass knotted up the score.

Playing a man down in the first half and the rest of the night, the Cougars tired to take control after the break, but Franklin used their number advantage to win.

Greenfield-Central will look to rebound tonight against rival Mt. Vernon at home.

Volleyball

Dragons sweep Royals

The New Palestine volleyball team overpowered the Eastern Hancock Royals on Tuesday night, sweeping to victory 3-0.

The Dragons won 25-6, 25-14, 25-15 to improved their record to 9-1.

Sophomore Allison Dennemann led the team with 14 kills and three aces.

Kara Morris finished with four aces and 26 assists. Mia Long added six kills and seven aces. Emma Tucher had five digs.

Leah Ferguson recorded two kills, two aces and an assisted block for Eastern Hancock, which dropped to 2-7.

Cougars tame Panthers

The Greenfield-Central Cougars shut out Knightstown 3-0 on Tuesday.

Rachel Irbe led the team with 18 kills, two assisted blocks, six digs and an ace.

The Cougars won 25-8, 25-19, 25-11.

Emily Diehr contributed eight kills and two solo blocks along with an ace. Laura Banton had nine kills and Madison Wise added four kills.

Molly Broome dished out 16 assists while Courtney Marchello had 13 assists.

Greenfield-Central improved to 3-4 on the year.

Girls golf

Marauders place 2nd

The Mt. Vernon girls golf team shot a combined 188 to finish second in its three-way match with Hamilton Heights and Guerin Catholic on Tuesday.

Guerin won with a 187. Hamilton Heights was third at 201.

Charley True earned co-medalist honors with a 38. Mt. Vernon seniors Molly Yee and Briley Wills shot a 42 and 46, respectively.

Savannah Mckemie fired a 62 to round out the scoring. Mt. Vernon is 9-3 on the season.

Boys tennis

Royals sweep Anderson Prep

The Eastern Hancock boys tennis team swept Anderson Prep Academy 5-0 on Tuesday.

Duncan Cherry won at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-2. At No. 2 singles, Garek Ferguson beat his opponent 6-1, 6-0.

The No. 1 doubles tandem of Corbin Jennings and Bryce Jackson scored a 6-3, 6-1 victory. Tony Cape and Jack Smith won at No. 2 doubles 6-1, 6-0.
